Mountain climbing is a fun and challenging activity for those who are fond of adventure. Aside from getting you adrenaline running, it is a good survival training even in the low lands. The challenges that you will face high up there train you to be quick-thinkers and creative people. Nature is unpredictable, so chances are you will need to improvise should there be anything that goes unplanned. However, aside from having the ability to improvise, you should not forget the basic things that you need to bring, in order to make your mountain-climbing journey safe and fun, and not a life-threatening, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
First thing first: Backpacks
Other than the gears, the backpack itself is essential. Start from the size and weight of the backpack. It is recommended that you choose a lighter backpack, because if you buy a heavy backpack, it adds to your already-heavy equipments. The size also matters. If you buy a bigger backpack, you will be thinking that there are still many space to put more things inside. Once you finish, without knowing it, your backpack might weigh a lot heavier than you expected. However, large full-featured backpack is suitable for longer journey. If you already own a large one, you might do some tricks to lighten the weight. You can remove extra pockets, straps, and buckles that you don’t really need. However, make a careful thought before doing so, as you can’t put back what’s been removed (except if you have some damn good sewing skills).
Pay attention to the weather for lightweight packing
A complete list is good, however, predicting the weather can be a good way of cutting down things you might not need. If it is a dry and hot season, you might want to cut down the number of socks, pants, and long-sleeved shirts. Bring lighter shirts instead just in case you sweat a lot and need more change. Know your own body, and how many clothes you might need. Bringing lightweight sleeping bags or a sleeping pad is most convenient in a hot weather. You can also bring ultralight shelters, provided that the place is not bug infested. Other essentials despite the weather change are map, compass, trip plan, a waterproof-containered matches, fire starter, knife, repair kit, whistle, first-aid kit, headlamp/flashlight, extra batteries, sunglasses, sunscreen, food, and water (a lot of it). For clothing, it is important that you bring underwear, gloves, pants, heat-insulated hat, raincoat, socks, long johns, hiking boots, short and long-sleeved shirts, and gaiters. Some personal things you can bring are repellent, toilet paper, sanitizer, camera, binoculars, extra hairband, and notebooks.
At last: the gears
Also important in bringing the best of your mountain climbing experience; the gears. These include rope, rappel device, large locking, additional locking and non-locking carabiners, nuts, hexes, cams, nut extraction tool, gear sling, single and double runners, quickdraws, chalk, chalk bag, and a climbing pack. Other personal things you might want to bring are helmet, harness, rock shoes, and a guidebook.
